Security vs. civil liberties: How citizens cope with threat, restriction, and ideology

چکیده

How do citizens balance their preferences for civil liberties and security in the context of a competitive party system? Using case terrorism counter-terrorism, I argue that willingness to support restrictions does not only depend on external shocks being targeted by counter-policy. Instead, it also depends ideological match with policymakers terrorist actors. an original survey experiment conducted Germany 2022, study how four factors feeling threatened attack, surveillance measure, ideology behind partisanship counteracting politicians influence attitudes whether these are mutually dependent. While earlier research has focused one kind (mostly Islamic), this paper examines various forms (religious, right-wing, climate-radical) they affect peoples' toward surveillance. The results show plays minor role, but matters sympathize proposes policy. extends our understanding political consequences polarization, threat perceptions terrorism, public policies.
